Estimados Amigos y Hermanos
Super asombrado por la unión y hermandad del Abbey School Old Boys... keep it up.
Dear Friends and Brothers
Super amazed by the unity and brotherhood of the Abbey School Old Boys ... keep it up.
I will try to summarize some of my life ... As I left Trinidad, I went to England I did studies in business administration, and I fell in love with my late wife and got married in Ecuador, her country of residence, which we had 3 children in Venezuela, lived there for 28 years.
Opened a few companies, through the years, but it was always the desire of my late wife to live in another country, we chose Mallorca, Spain.
I have 9 years in this beautiful island, true that the quality of life is far superior to many other countries,
I'm sorry for the people who live in Venezuela, but I see that there is a collective paranoia muggings and robberies and other things are better left unmentioned.
What left me super impressed was the amount of birds and animals that come to my house ..
Caraballeda from parrots to iguanas and all in the wild.
Having worked many years for the money I decided to take a spiritual change and work, which brings me to the sea, my passion .. sail (FORCED TO WORK .. borne TO SAIL) WHEN ONE WORKS IN YOUR PASSION, IS NO LONGER WORK.
I have a small Cyber Cafe in Playa de Palma, Mallorca which I close when I go sailing.
The Pizzeria and Ice Cream Caraballeda, unfortunately was closed because my parents were older and none of us wanted to continue the tradition by being a very committed, many hours and days.
As our brother Alfredo was saying to me. It was a meeting place for the people of Caracas, I would like to thank those of you that came to contact and stopped to say hello, but thank God we now have internet access.
I hope my friends like Emoffie, Mezzana, Assam and others will contact soon
Many greetings

Hi Nigel,
Michael asked me to forward this to you, he thought you might be interested...
If I may add, I am extremely interested in what is going to take place with respect to the 100th. Anniversary, but is it the Abbey School or the monastery?
Also the store re: The elusive vault of pictures that Father Benedict (RIP) left.
Someone has got to know about this.
I have asked questions before, and I am sure that knowing Father Benedict and how organized he was, were he still alive, I think I can state that he probably would have given us access to them, or at least an opportunity to copy them, as KaZim has suggested.
Do you have any Idea why (based on what I've been hearing) the Old Boys in Trinidad are not "communicating" more with the MSB Brothers outside in other countries?
One last thing, for a long time now I have not received the "Circular".
Is it no longer being circulated?
Regards,
Cornel

... Once again an "EXCELLENT IDEA" surfaces ...
According to the Good Book (and it would be nice) "... give and you will receive a thousand fold ..."
I'm probably misquoting some verse or another..
I am sure the Good Sheppard at the Abbey on Mount St. Benedict could use an injection of funds.
But as a good return Gesture, we could receive access to that "Illusive Archive of Photographs "of"A Lifetime of Memories" of ALL of the Alumni, in photographs, taken by our beloved Father Benedict,
At all events, sports and activities that took place at "The Abbey School, Mount St. Benedict”, that WE were ALL part of.
I don't know, maybe I am using the 'wrong' words, maybe, there are the 'correct' words,
But: "A Journey Begins with the First Step..."
How I wish now I only purchased more and not just the ones of myself and those of friends ..........
AND, I also believe/feel, that a Plaque is a great idea to mark an anniversary of "ONE HUNDRED YEARS".
I can see no reason, or should I say "No Reasonable Reason", why "We”, the Fruits" of The Abbey School Mount St Benedict, could be denied this.
But I am no authority on these matters, maybe our learned "Brother Lawyers" may be able to shed some light, and possibly, find a path that would lead to this?
I Love you All, my Brothers,
Have a Great New Year,
Packed with Beautiful Memories and Good Health.
Cornel

Sarkis, Mi Hermano,
What a collection of history, I knew many of the faces, but many I don't know, some of the older brothers
May know all the faces ??, Thank you,
Funny eh!, How we can get almost anything, anywhere in this world, and we still can't get one single photo album from the Abbey School, of all the great events the students took part in, I could remember Voosh, always taking lots of photos and for so many years, I do hope one day, that these collections, will appear thru the proper channels.
I believe that with the 100th year Celebrations coming up in just a few months, we must officially part take, in some form or the other, just out of respect if you need a reason.
Now what I am suggesting is just an idea, in order to receive we must give.
This is the perfect year as an Entire Alumni, to make an offering to the Church, in making this offering; we will have to have, a private meeting, with the Father Abbot.
In this meeting we can only hope, some of our questions will be addressed, as we make our humble donation of whatever we can collect,
I will give USD$100.oo for the cause, the celebration, if others can give only $10, there are many of us, our donations should be well received.
This is our year to make peace, with all our brothers.
Glen Evelyn, had an idea of a Plaque, which could be placed on the Castle, or down by the church, still a good idea, but the only way, any of these ideas will happen, is thru the good Father on the hill.
Our roads leed to him.
I hope all are reading the Circular, this is my feed back.
Best regards, have good year mi amigos,
Adios, Glen McKoy.

Hello Nigel and Glen,
I recently communicated with Kazim and inquired if it would be possible to create an album of photographs of (if possible) of all the years at the, The Abbey School.
I know that this sounds like an enormous undertaking but any journey begins with the first step, or idea;
I did not know about any archive of Father Benedict’s pictures,
But I do know that while I was at the Mount He pretty much was the self appointed school photographer.
It would be nice to bounce some ideas around.

Hi Cornel,
So great to hear from you. I enjoy all the things you share and appreciate you.
Yes, I am the person facilitating the MSB Old Boys website.
Let me know more of your idea. I am always open to serving, and once all the other major participants know that this a project and I have the okay, sure, why not.
At present I am in New York/New Jersey.
Looking forward to hearing more from you....Kazim
PS. I just read in one of the recent newsletters that Fr Benedict left an archive, but we do not have access to it. The question is how can we get permission to scan the photos on site so the photos remain the property of the holders.

Hi Kazim,
Thank you for your kind words and well wishes.
Can you tell me, are you the brother that is "running" a website for the MSB Old Boys?
I was entertaining the thought, that if it is possible, can someone or group, find a way of compiling an album of all of the pictures of the ones taken in all of the years during our attendance and time at The Abbey School?
I am sure that that would be quite and undertaking, there has got to be someone that has a collection of a lot of the pictures.
I know that during my time, father Benedict took most all of the pictures and made them available to the boys.
He would number them. and you could order them by number every time he posted, for all kinds of occasions and Sport activities.
Like I said, that would probably be quite an undertaking.
Do you reside in Trinidad?

Hi Cornel:
I remember you as a "big boy" (compared to me) when you were at the Mount.
You were one of the boys engaged in building the dens in the bush weren't you?
You and I didn't hang out together at the Mount probably due to our age difference, so probably you don' t remember me, as a " small boy" from Venezuela.
I was good friends with Jan " Dutch" Koenraadt, a Dutch boy from Surinam, if you remember him.
I was there 5 years from 1964 to 1969.
I started in Prep " A" in 1964, and I left Form V in 1969.
So, as you can see much of my formative years were spend at the Mount also.
I remember all those names you mention below, plus Mr. Basanta, Spanish teacher, Mr Chow Fatt, Math Teacher and great ping-pong player, Mr Yip Chuck, always smoking, was my biology teacher, Also Fr. Gregory's (the Duck) brother, who was Fr Augustine ("Rughead") was my French teacher. Bro. Rupert was in charge of our swim team the Aqualads.
Mr Carter was also my teacher, but I forget what subject.
I remember Cecil Camacho, and Phillip Laughlin, he ended up graduating with me in Form V, I think he had to repeat a year.
He was also the singer for the school rock-and-roll band.
Then I remember Rafael "Cheche" Echeverria, who was in your class.
I recently met up with him in Florida.
Strangely enough, I basically remember almost everybody in your class also (from that picture) , as I looked up to all of you guys as the" big boys" to learn all the tricks from.... and I learned well I think.
And a bunch of other names, too numerous to mention.

OUR OPINION

Dear Gregory

I had to publish your letter – a harsh warning to smokers.
While I agree with you in principle that smoking is a health hazard and while we are yet to learn all if its harmful effects, I do not share your intolerant approach.
Smokers require sympathy and persuasion.
It is evident from your letter that you have never been a smoker.

As my coordinator will have you know, once hooked on tobacco, it is extremely difficult, almost impossible without the ´Lord´s help, to kick the habit.

To all my readers:
If you are not in the habit, don´t take it up!
If your are: try hard and pray to lay off the cigarettes!.

Dear Friends,
Tuesdays short resume of my trip to TT.
This was my last day in Trinidad so finally too some time to myself, until dinner time.
The event was in my host´s home, the BBQ, finally something free !!!!! jajajaja
I did my best to invite at least a dozen friends outside those that were invited by the Association,
There was food for all, as everybody brought something to help out.
We even had a bite of the fish caught on Sunday, delicious.
Thankfully that this finally was not an all male reunion, there were women.
Gracious wives of our classmates.
There were sufficient food and drinks to satisfy the hardiest.
The event was a grandiose way to finish the visit,
I thank all of you and I am sure Don is in agreement, for the special time that you provided us, hope that we made it worthwhile your participation in the events.

Hola Mi Hermano Andres, ( Oh Wise & Great Knight.)
Thank you for this email.
You are blessed my friend, six daughters, you are spoiled ha! ha! I am so glad to read about the Agencia Global Educativa.
I must inform you that, we the brothers above, are presently working and addressing the two questions you asked.
1) Will the Fr. Abbot abide to this request?
2) What will happen to the social services actually rendered by them ???
The 1st. question is our number one priority; the 2nd will also be addressed with the Fr. Abbot, should permission be granted.
We have been studying and working on this concept for a few days now, to develop a proposal that will be beneficial to both parties.
When this is completed, we will advise the alumni of our intent.
Geographical proximity:
We know that English language would make Venezuelan parents eager for the services that could so be provided.
Of course Andres with your expert knowledge of the immediate demand.
We will require your support in establishing this relationship, should our request be granted, for the greater part of our international student body, is right next door.
I am sending this email to our brothers above, letting them know of this potential market, that you can bring us.
In the event of a positive outcome.
At this point I would like to say so much, but we can't put the cart in front of the horse right ha! ha!.
I remain yours faithfully, Glen McKoy

Dear brothers,
As you may know I run , with the help of one of my six daughters , Agencia Global Educativa ( www.globalfast.net ) .
Although we actually represent some universities and colleges our basic endeavour is sending students abroad to study foreign languages.
We send students mainly to : Canada , USA , UK , Ireland and continental Europe. We normally use Language Academies in these destinies.
The possibility to offer English as a foreign language studies in the Abbey´s facilities looks promising to us back here in Venezuela.
This could be a separate department within the institute´s array of careers offered.
It could serve to just teach the language and/or to prepare alumni (from the English language point of view) to enter into the different careers taught in the institute.
Geographical proximity and excel quality teaching of the English language would make Venezuelan parents eager for the services that could so be provided.
Notwithstanding afore indications two questions arise and keep haunting me :
Will the monks abide to this request??
What will happen to the social services actually rendered by them ???

Dear Nigel,
Thank you for your positive input of what Shaun presented as a realistic idea - this Abbey Institute of Technology, according to the demand for higher leaning.
All courses internationally accredited, maybe thru an exchange with other international institutions for their class rooms in the sun, this will put us on the map, even if it’s only summer classes, the institute is always open.
Language classes in English, will draw students from unstable countries in the region, whose parents are looking for a refuge not far away, this will always draw the highest tuition in U.S.$, so many options, such as the petroleum industries and related trades.
Should this idea get any kind of approval, I would think the entire project could be done by Knights, who have the required qualifications and background for this mission; consultation, legal and financial matters etc. If not, then we look outside for the best.
We are The Knights of White Stones, and therein lies our greatest power - what will be, will be. We are "reunited and it feels so good". As it was written in the book, The King of Hearts, on continues Chapter Twelve, the Quest has begun.
It is time for the Knights of White Stones, to arise from the ashes, like a many feathered Phoenix, on our flight back to the heights from whence we came...Long Live the Realm, Long Live the Club, Long Live the Mount,
Yours faithfully, Glen G. McKoy.

Dear Nigel,
Thank you for your invaluable input.
While I had no idea that my thoughts would be fast tracked at such velocity, I thank George for being the catalyst for discussion.
I agree that other members/alumni should be included in this endeavour; there may be resources available within the group that we are unaware of.
However, before we launch into informing everyone (who has a right to know), I would caution that first we should get by the first potential hurdle. The Abbot.
Once this is established, then everyone should become involved. Members are: Potential investors, business contacts, lawyers, Engineers, Architects... our resources to create a "Super Dream Team" committee to bring an idea into a reality.
Nigel, I know you are the keeper of the MSB Alumni database. In due time, it will be called upon to go public. But not yet, I think.
I had a brief discussion with a design/consultancy firm director.
He said the first thing to be done would be to have and architect and civil engineer go through each building and see what needs to be brought up to code.
MSB is a very old building. He said, sometimes it is cheaper to build than refurbish.
So depending on what comes out of that preliminary evaluation, could either determine that we can move forward with present infrastructure, or face a considerably higher budget than we anticipated.
The next step would be a tendering process for refurbishment or retrofitting.
Many things to consider.
Hopefully, we would not have bitten off more than we can chew.
Kind regards,
Shaun Gianetti

Dear Laz,
There. You have been nominated and seconded by this very informal committee.
I doubt that anyone at all would object to your representing us in an approach to Fr. Abbot. Rather, I'm sure that everyone will applaud the idea.
I'm available to help in preparing a draft letter of proposal, for review and amendment by others. Please let me know if I can be of any help.
Congratulations on all that you've done and still are doing for the Abbey School and for its future. May God guide us in this venture?
Gentlemen, may I also suggest that it is entirely appropriate to advise the entire Old Boys Association (or whatever name it goes by) of the on-going current discussion
re. The idea of rejuvenating and restoring the old school.
Many, I feel, would be disgusted to think that they were being left out of the discussion.
Many indeed may be interested in contributing to the overall scheme.
We have an ideal opportunity to bring something wonderful back to life, and we shall need the support of many people to make it happen.
Unless someone objects, I believe we owe it to our friends to keep them apprised of this development and to solicit their interest.
In such a case, I would like to include everyone for whom we have an email address on this latest, most interesting subject.
George - thanks for expressing the idea that came to you.
Many have thought it, but you expressed it, and this was a true inspiration from God.
Please pray for the success of this venture.
With respect.

I am prepared to do whatever is required, with my own money and my own time if need be.

Gentlemen,
Might I nominate Ladislao as the person who should be asked to represent this marvellous idea to Fr. Abbot, on behalf of us all.
Assuming that Fr. Abbot shows any kind of interest, we can then go a step further and begin development of a business plan to rejuvenate MSB as a going entity.

Hello George,
Of course this is the question to most answers, show me the money.
Only if it is attractive enough to a few investors for the start-up, this first offer will be to selected members only, then others to make sure we can meet the projected budget.
A study will be done, covered by us, and whoever else is needed, a good law firm and banker.
I am prepared to pay my share in a study, I cannot invest millions, however may be able to secure up 5 million TT in shares or more.
As Shaun said, speculations so I cannot make any serious calls, with a bird in the sky.
None of us are stupid, that’s for sure ha! ha!
However this is not just, expensive condos or a new strip mall, this is something bigger than that.
It’s trying to build the best, to educate the young, for the future of many countries in the region.
Anyhow, Happy Fishing, love you guys
