Greetings, Fellow ex-Inmates of the Prison on the Hill
I do not want to pour any cold water on this hot topic but let me add my two cents to give you a more informed reading on the situation.
When I went back to TT in 2002 (for 8 years) before heading back to UK for family reasons, I too have a similar wish to see revival in the old school if only for the vain hope that one’s kids or grandkids could follow in our paths and get educated there.
I did quite a bit of private canvassing among the old boys from my era (1955 – 1961: same time as Nigel and Ladislao).
I got mixed reactions!
Some of the guys just did not want to know.
They still carried bad memories of their years on the hill of the only school in TT which was run seriously like an institution (ie no go home time – one mid term let out for one weekend).
The ones who were lucky to have brothers (like Nigel and myself) were not as affected since we had at least one ‘friend’ when things got tough with the ‘Anglo vs Panyol’ culture that was always there.
The only thing that bridged this gap and created some cross-culture friendships was team sport and the Scouts and the Scout band which Nigel and I belonged to for the duration.
The only exception was the Syrian crowd who stuck together as they do and became the only significant clique.
Reason was their fathers all knew one another and did business together so it was the only ‘family’ within the group.
The boys from BG stuck together as did the St Lucians.
The only sane group (as become evident years later) were the day boys.
They could go home in the late afternoon and chill out at home with Mum cooking a nice dinner while we had to digest a bland fixed menu – take it or leave it!
So it was luck of the draw, especially for the less tough kids who found themselves solo and either grew up and learned from the experience or, as many did, left the school after 1-2 years.
I suspect the die-hards the long term inmates who got through the first 3-4 years.
After that you were well seasoned and mature individuals who could hold you own anywhere in the world.
That was the real ‘graduation’ from the Mount!
Those who I reconnected with who complained and bitched were either part of the problem or could not take the pressure of ‘graduating’!
OK, so I found some supporters for taking an interest, I visited the Mount a few times, spoke to Fr Cuthbert, Fr Augustine, Fr Benedict, Bro Vincent and the new young Abbott, a totally different culture from the Dutch Fr Abbot, Adelbert Van Duin!!
I took my kids up the bush track to the ‘Reservoir’ which was nothing to see anymore.
I also saw but did not go into the gated compound which was now a half derelict rehab centre and the refectory Building was being rented by some commercial guy in PoS who was ripping them off with low rent and late payments.
I formed an unofficial committee with another old boy, top architect, Brian Lewis, Fr Benedict, Bro something (can’t remember name) and my CIC lawyer friend Brien De Gannes and another CIC friend who’d been doing more for the Mount and Monastery than any of our old boys, Brendon Garcia.
Fr Abbott sat in to most of the 4 or so meetings we have and I even wrote up and circulated minutes.
We discussed the many problems they were having like squatters all over the lower area by the field where we used to go up the track and go swimming where Daniel de Verteuil cracked open his head (badly but not fatally) diving into the natural pool in the river stream.
Brien gave them some good legal advice and J D Sellier (His firm ) took action and got results eventually but not totally.
Next was the couple who did a deal with the Abbott to live in the flat above the Holy Shop (next to the Monastey Church).
These shrewd buggers also ran the shop and probably pilfered the place.
They then claimed they could not pay rent and ended up as freebie squatters there for almost a year.
Carl Hudson Phillips top QC in the island stepped in to negotiate but it took him months before the Mount then had to PAY them to leave.
Next the dereliction of the school and old dormitory building on the side which was shut for a few years due to being unsafe.
Next was the field which was badly overgrown and the building in need of repair.
I was working for Royal Bank at the time and was able to help push through a deal for the bank to rent the field as a sports centre for its staff in the St Augustine area.
The bank at their expense not only cleared the field but attended to all the surroundings and the sports house and the swimming pool.
Not cheap but it brought the place back to something I remember from the old days.
The another smartass guy built a skills training building at the corner of the field without permission and was now an official squatter since the Abbot or his predecessor did nothing to stop it when they could.
Legally there was nothing much they could or wanted to do.
Only Fr Cuthbert seemed to functioning but even he had his yoghurt factory robbed by a trusted employee.
The old seminary was still standing and used for the occasional retreat but that would have been just enough to pay for the cleaning and electricity the way the Abbot ran the place.
I had lunch 2 or 3 times with all of them in the monastery refectory where Fr Benedict even played the piano as best he could but we all had a good laugh.
Fr Augustine could not see but was still very sharp minded and said his worst memory of the boys was when Lawrence Scott (who was in my class in Prep B in 1995, joined the monastery as a Brother but he later left.
Fr Benedict’s health deteriorated over the years I was there and I went to see him a couple times then to his funeral.
A really good man, God Bless Him!!
Bro Rupert is another good guy and he does a lot of good work keeping in touch with our Venezuelan brothers.
We told the committee that if we could produce a holistic business plan of the entire Mount we would have a professional document that could be passed around the old boys to contribute and bring the place back up to a basic standard that would keep it at least from deteriorating.
He said the whole development was actually a gift from the British TT government years ago and was owned by a trust.
The trust in turn was under the control of some Irish based Catholic organisation in Ireland where they took their orders from.
It seems the Irish did not want to put any money into it and it was up to the Abbott to do the best he could to finance whatever was needed.
Best wishes

Brian's suggestion is an excellent one!
We are now getting MSB SPAM of little interest to our community at large.
However well-intentioned the writers are, and most of us are not as fortunate as Don (to be comfortably retired and contented looking as he is!),
We need to get back to Ladislao and Don's competent management of the circle in a relaced and ad hoc way.
These latest mails are downtime distractions while we are still guarding our time to make a living.
I agree that a website blog (which is very easy and sometimes even a free add-on to whatever service the MSB site subscribes) IS the place to transact this social networking.
The good news is that people are awakened and participating, But it's not for everybody!
Not sure who is the poor fellow to organise this so I am copying Don and Ladislao too.
Let me know if you need any more input from me.
Best regards and to Brian.

May I suggest that a blog be set up on the web site for old boys who want to write about issues. (There is a Blog spot run by Don Mitchell)
I am copying this to Jon Golding because I think he is well versed to understand what needs to be done in this regard.

Don,
How remiss of me!
Yes, you're right! And I'm sure we are all glad you are the filter!!
Thanks for reminding us and for all you good work.
I think we need to change the caption from MSB Old Boys to MSB Old MEN!! At least in my case!
All the best

Ladislao,
You have a better perspective on this than I do so I am happy to contribute this input.
However, it may need a bit of editing so please send me the version you are happy with so far and I will try to make it a bit more gentle and inviting since when I wrote it I was in some way reacting to the negativity in the air.
Regards
Jon
(No problem –Jon, I only kept the historical side of the Mounts problems as most of us have been without official information from the source of the news, editor)

84 Pow Martin
84 Pow Mervyn
80 Pow Norman
If you know them, please give me a line.
In keeping with the Circular´s equanimity and to keep a promise, an article by David Boehmler
----------------------------------------------------------------.
Dear Ladislao.
It has been some time since I wrote and asked you to post my letter in which I hoped to get some comments on the subject of religion, worship etc.
I certainly appreciate that you did put my comments on the MSB page.
I have to admit that I received very little response.
Faith and religion seems to be a subject that very few value.
With your help I would like to make another small effort.
Here it is......Many of us 'Mount boys' are now approaching our 'use by date' 'three score and ten', which would seem to be our allotted time for the pleasures of this Earth.
I wonder how we all feel about it.
Oddly enough, if this is how it is to be 'this short little life' gone by so quickly, I have some personal questions or thoughts on the subject.
First of all...... 'I am not quite ready to go yet'.
It feels as though so far, I haven't really accomplished very much at all.
There are so many things that I haven't even begun.
I love life now more than I ever have in the past so why would I want it to end now when it has hardly begun?
Three score and ten, just does not seem to make sense.
I have finally learned to weed out the small stuff, I feel ready to do something new, something worthwhile, something I have not had enough time for so far.
Yes, I am ready to begin a thousand things.
So what is with the three score and ten?.
I need as much again, and some.
And if Heaven awaits, well why am I not excited about that either, I don't think it is for me.
Why am I and everyone else that I know trying to postpone it as long as possible?
All that I know and love is right here on the Earth.
Yes I love the Earth and life on it, I have never known anything else.
I am even made of the same stuff.
So why just 70 years?
Why not one hundred and twenty years, or three hundred, or a thousand.
Better still why not 'forever'.
So here is a question.
What does the bible mean when it says 'this means everlasting life their taking in knowledge of you the only true God and the one you sent forth Jesus Christ' (John 17. 3).
And if we manage to attain such an awesome prospect, where is it to be.
If it is 'up there' (no disrespect intended) what does it mean when it says the meek will inherit the Earth and find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace? Psalm 37 10,11 or that the lame will climb up just as the stag does? or that 'the righteous will possess the Earth and reside forever upon it'? Psalms 37. 29.
I cannot think of a more worthwhile question to investigate, even all the different features of this question.
We at Mount St Benedict went to church more than most people, we were taught by priests.
We were taught that Jesus Christ was from heaven, a real person who died that those who put faith in him might attain everlasting life....
Was this the truth or was it all 'Hocus-pocus.
Would anyone like to discuss these things with me.
Is everlasting life possible, What happens at death? Why do we die?
Was three score and ten, the original purpose?
Where are the dead.
Whatever happened to Hell?
Did it exist in the first place, Where did those who were supposed be in it go when it ceased to exist?
Is Adam and Eve a fairy story, or did we originate from apes, what did Jesus believe on this subject?
I would be really happy to discuss any of these or any other questions on the subject of faith and the Bible.
Yours sincerely,
David de Boehmler.

I will do whatever I can to help: if my home were larger or better appointed you could have stayed with us: not now but hopefully next year.
Otherwise, I will help with your accommodation and transport, as best I can and I will see if I can get some money from the Old Boy's account.

Dear Joe
I have plans to travel to Trinidad to meet Don Mitchell, during his visit there in May last we met was in over 35 years ago?? or more I have just returned from Europe and internal visits here in Venezuela as before,
I have problems with the lodgings, and am looking for a solution
The airline ticket is easy as it can be obtained in local currency.
I am in the process of contacting old boys and friends for help, do you have a magic solution, jajajajaj
This is a crazy situation but I am sure I shall find a solution.
Naturally as Don wrote, it would be nice to meet as many old boys as possible.
There is about a month´s time so maybe there could be a reunion?
I am taking with me a camping tent, just in case, jajajaja
God bless

Hi Kazim........
Great work my brother.
It is always important to publicly recognize those individuals in our lives who personally contribute their time for the benefit of others.
These folks who you mention have a real passion for MSB and have demonstrated it in so many ways through decades.
Thank you for being one of these very special “old boys”.......
May God bless you and your much valued and appreciated work,

Subject: Mt St Benedict Alumni website New Feature Article
The Mt. St. Benedict Alumni Website is starting a new segment featuring our Mount Boys.
This Project is on behalf of Ladislao Kertesz, Don Mitchell, Nigel Boos, and others like Jon Golding, Glen McCoy, and The Alumni Association Executive members, and in honor of their life's work, the continual work they do to keep our fraternity together.
This segment serves to share more about the Boys and add to the work that the newsletter does. We will be featuring other Mount Boys. If you would like a feature section on yourself, kindly send us details, photos, etc, to me at this email address. The feature sections will be archived so the website visitors will always have access to these articles.
Often times when we do honor our Boys is when it is too late. We are now showing our appreciation to your life's work. We are recognizing the contribution you have made in whatever fields you have pursued in life. And there are children of the Boys who are now learning of our fraternity. This feature section is being dedicated to our younger generation as we leave our unique legacy to this coming generation.
Again, this work is to support the tremendous work that Ladislao, Don, and Nigel does on behalf of us. We continue to appreciate all your sharing and look forward to serving you more going forward. On behalf of the team, Blessings to you and your families......Kazim

Dear Friends,

FROM: DGurley@jdsellier.com

Dear Fellow Directors and Secretary;

Please be informed that I recently filed the March 2012 Annual Return of the Association. A copy is attached for your record and information.

Could we have a meeting of the Board when Ladislao is in T&T… say on Monday 21st May in the late afternoon ?

I am also minded to have you and other alumni over to my home for drinks … may be in the afternoon of Sunday 20th if that is convenient for Ladislao, and Don (who will also be visiting Trinidad at that time).

If Don and his brother Gordon are tied up with family after wedding commitments we may have to postpone the drinks get together until Monday evening.

Dear Brothers.....

Some of you are listed in Nigel Boos’ database as graduating in the class of 1962 while others would have graduated in ‘62 but left earlier.

I suspect that after 50 years I do not remember you because you were probably Day Boys and do not appear in the photograph of the graduating class or you really graduated earlier or later.

I am forwarding to you a little note that I put together......

(very sorry to forget the names of our remaining brothers; looking at Nigel’s MSB spreadsheet did not help as the remaining listed names appear to be either wrong or did not ring a bell in my mind)

In the last half-century, we have journeyed from the sunrise to the sunset, from our prime to our golden age, from the spring to the autumn of our lives .

Each one of us and the world around us have changed dramatically over the last half-century; many of these changes have been revolutionary in nature.

It would have been great to celebrate this unique milestone together but I guess that it will be impossible.

So here is the next best thing that I could think of to reconnect......

I am guessing that at this time we fit one of the categories described below:

* are well, sick, with God in heaven, depressed, recovered, .....

* serving God

* are married, divorced, widowed, re-married

* have children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren......

* working, retired, semi-retired

* rich, poor or in-between

* practicing our faith, agnostic, spiritual

* living in different parts of the world from where we were when attending MSB

* lost contact with one another with few minor exceptions

In looking back to my personal recollection of 1962, the following vivid memories come to mind:

* Excited that this would be my last year at MSB so I could go on with the rest of my life

* 50th Anniversary of MSB – the big fete at the school culminating with the $10,000 Bingo in POS

* Lots and lots of time studying for the GCE

* My parents visiting MSB for the first and only time

* Sadness over the fact that we had no final class celebration/party/fete when we completed the school year and went on our personal journeys in life

* Peter De Morvay and me leaving for Piarco Airport to travel back one last time to Venezuela

* Not having the maturity to understand and recognize your personal contributions to my development from childhood to early manhood

* Not understanding the full beneficial impact that the Abbey School experience would have on the rest of my life

Today, I

* Am a practicing Catholic journeying through the last miles to meet God

* Married to Fara for 42 years with three children (Marc – 38, Matt – 36, Melisa 32) and 5 grandchildren (Tanner – 12, Kylie – 9, Madelyn – 7, Megan – 5, Charlotte – 2)

* 66 years young, semi-retired for the last 6 years working as a safety consultant after 37 years working in DuPont

* Reasonably healthy but starting to experience the little aches and pains; weight is a constant challenge

* Live in Collierville, Tennessee, which is in the Memphis (Elvis Presley hometown) metropolitan area

* Very thankful and appreciative of the good, bad and in-between experience from 1956 to 1962 at MSB

* Mom and dad in heaven

* Try to spend as much time as possible with family

* Work related trips to Europe, Asia Pacific and North America

* Faithfully read the Abbey School blog; very thankful for Ladislao for his time and devotion to keep us all in touch

I invite each of my dear classmates to share their past=====>current state via our Abbey School blog or via a response to this note.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND EACH MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY

Hi George,

What you have done is to set your browser to open on the 2006 blog.

We are now at the 2012 blog:

http://abbeyschoolmtstbenedict2012circulars.blogspot.com/

What you need to do is to delete the 2006 link from your bookmarks and enter in its place the 2012 blog.

You should do that at the beginning of each year.

I have to start a new blog each year, since I want to keep them to a reasonable length.

Hope that helps.
