Circular No 545

Newsletter for alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

Caracas, 14 April 2012 No.545

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

FROM: DGurley@jdsellier.com

Dear Fellow Directors and Secretary;

Please be informed that I recently filed the March 2012 Annual Return of the Association. A copy is attached for your record and information.

Could we have a meeting of the Board when Ladislao is in T&T… say on Monday 21st May in the late afternoon ?

I am also minded to have you and other alumni over to my home for drinks … may be in the afternoon of Sunday 20th if that is convenient for Ladislao, and Don (who will also be visiting Trinidad at that time).

If Don and his brother Gordon are tied up with family after wedding commitments we may have to postpone the drinks get together until Monday evening.

Regards,

Dennis Gurley

One of my recent house guests is a master photographer.

These are some of his photos of his visit.

The plants, peacock, and turtles are mine.

Just thought you would be amused.

Subject: Fw: HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY ABBEY SCHOOL CLASS OF 1962

Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2012 05:57:54 -0500

Dear Brothers.....

Some of you are listed in Nigel Boos’ database as graduating in the class of 1962 while others would have graduated in ‘62 but left earlier.

I suspect that after 50 years I do not remember you because you were probably Day Boys and do not appear in the photograph of the graduating class or you really graduated earlier or later.

I am forwarding to you a little note that I put together......

With brotherly love, George (Yury, Shish)

PS – Please forgive my fading memory

David Bratt....Eden Hutton....Gerhard Most....Peter De Morvay....David Da Costa....Geoffrey Henderson....Sean O’Connor.... Paul de Verteuil....Jeffrey Gransaull....Jacques de Verteuil.....Geoffrey Herrerra....Peter Laughlin....Norman Tang....George Mickiewicz....plus....?????????? (very sorry to forget the names of our remaining brothers; looking at Nigel’s MSB spreadsheet did not help as the remaining listed names appear to be either wrong or did not ring a bell in my mind)

In the last half-century, we have journeyed from the sunrise to the sunset, from our prime to our golden age, from the spring to the autumn of our lives .

Each one of us and the world around us have changed dramatically over the last half-century; many of these changes have been revolutionary in nature.

It would have been great to celebrate this unique milestone together but I guess that it will be impossible.

So here is the next best thing that I could think of to reconnect......

I am guessing that at this time we fit one of the categories described below:

* are well, sick, with God in heaven, depressed, recovered, .....

* serving God

* are married, divorced, widowed, re-married

* have children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren......

* working, retired, semi-retired

* rich, poor or in-between

* practicing our faith, agnostic, spiritual

* living in different parts of the world from where we were when attending MSB

* lost contact with one another with few minor exceptions

In looking back to my personal recollection of 1962, the following vivid memories come to mind:

* Excited that this would be my last year at MSB so I could go on with the rest of my life

* 50th Anniversary of MSB – the big fete at the school culminating with the $10,000 Bingo in POS

* Lots and lots of time studying for the GCE

* My parents visiting MSB for the first and only time

* Sadness over the fact that we had no final class celebration/party/fete when we completed the school year and went on our personal journeys in life

* Peter De Morvay and me leaving for Piarco Airport to travel back one last time to Venezuela

* Not having the maturity to understand and recognize your personal contributions to my development from childhood to early manhood

* Not understanding the full beneficial impact that the Abbey School experience would have on the rest of my life

Today, I

* Am a practicing Catholic journeying through the last miles to meet God

* Married to Fara for 42 years with three children (Marc – 38, Matt – 36, Melisa 32) and 5 grandchildren (Tanner – 12, Kylie – 9, Madelyn – 7, Megan – 5, Charlotte – 2)

* 66 years young, semi-retired for the last 6 years working as a safety consultant after 37 years working in DuPont

* Reasonably healthy but starting to experience the little aches and pains; weight is a constant challenge

* Live in Collierville, Tennessee, which is in the Memphis (Elvis Presley hometown) metropolitan area

* Very thankful and appreciative of the good, bad and in-between experience from 1956 to 1962 at MSB

* Mom and dad in heaven

* Try to spend as much time as possible with family

* Work related trips to Europe, Asia Pacific and North America

* Faithfully read the Abbey School blog; very thankful for Ladislao for his time and devotion to keep us all in touch

I invite each of my dear classmates to share their past=====>current state via our Abbey School blog or via a response to this note.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND EACH MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY

George (Yury, Shish)

Please share this memo with our other graduate classmates whose name I forgot or whose e-mail I do not have; thanks.

Thanks, Shish,

For checking up on these "graduation" dates.

If anyone would like to do so, I'd appreciate if you could clarify for me and confirm the years during which you attended school at MSB.

Happy Easter, everyone.

Hi George,

What you have done is to set your browser to open on the 2006 blog.

We are now at the 2012 blog:

http://abbeyschoolmtstbenedict2012circulars.blogspot.com/

What you need to do is to delete the 2006 link from your bookmarks and enter in its place the 2012 blog.

You should do that at the beginning of each year.

I have to start a new blog each year, since I want to keep them to a reasonable length.

Hope that helps.

Don

Interesting, Don.

Mine opens up with the 2006 page.

Perhaps the blog address has changed; my current one is

http://msbtunapuna.blogspot.com/

It is the one that I found back in 2006 when I first discovered this treasure.

Has it changed since?......

Muchas gracias,

George

It is presently set up to show the latest Circular on the screen.

We are a few weeks in arrears, but what you see is the latest one that I have received.

Hi Don

Would it be possible to modify our blog so that the latest entry/newsletter shows up on the screen rather than the current set up?

Thanks,

George

Glen

You have not heard from me for some time as I have been in Barbados and Guyana for just over two and a half months.

So that's the reason my Brother.

They talk about sunny Spain but it can be darn cold here in the winter.

Un abrazo.

Clive.
