Caracas,
26 May 2012 No.551
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear
Friends,
I
am going to make a short resume of my trip to TT day by day in the
next Circulars, starting with my first day Friday 18 of May 2012.
This
will help you visualize the activities as they have taken place.
I
arrived in TT using the Caribbean Airlines, direct flight from
Caracas.
Winston
Ramsahai was so kind to wait for me at the airport, next stop lunch,
Grand Bazar shopping Mall , Chadon Beni restaurant, with the Winston
family.
Debating
as what to do next as it was early, we decided on going up the Mount
as the weather was good and I did not want to leave this activity for
later on.
Just
like they say “Don’t Leave for Tomorrow What You Can Do Today”,
as I did not have the complete control and the use of my time.
Effectively,
with luck on our side, we managed to meet all the living priest in
this short visit and even we had a 3pm teatime together with Fr.
Cuthbert and Fr. Augustine.
The
photos show Fr. Hilderbrand Greene who told us of his predicament
with Parkinson, although he was very sharp and was about to go to
help out with counselling of the people gathered at the entrance of
the church.
At
the reception, we left a message to let the Abbot know that we were
there as he himself was counselling at the time of our arrival.
While
we talked with Fr. Greene, The Abbot, took a break and was able to
talk to us about the arrangements for the Jubilee celebration, look
at the photo.
He
gave us a copy of the Book Cover .............., to promote on the
Circular for The Alumni which is available on www.amazon.com.
I
do not want to be extensive on this because the list of activities
was being prepared and was not available, he promised to email it.
I
shall include it in our Circular as soon as is received.
But
I can give you some insight.
There
is going to be an indoor outdoor mass for 1200 people, with
chairs, tent, big scent, big screen television for that
quantity of people in the parking lot in front of the church.
Winston
let the abbot know that ASAA was ready to help with whatever was
needed as our cooperation to the celebration.
The
Abbot mentioned that the proffer donation of a 180 ft lighted cross
on the Mount was not accepted by the management team.
Our
offer to help out in the activities was not rejected but was told
that anyone was welcomed to assist at the scheduled meetings at the
Monastery.
I
would like to make a comment on the as this would seem to be a step
forward but from my point of view it does not mean that there is a
wish for us to be there.
What
I would have liked to hear was that the association was welcomed to
participate at this conclave, the oldboys are not “anyone” but an
entity with a collective purpose, while anyone is just as said, “no
one”.
I
am sure that the association´s participation to the conclave would
be viable if the “Mount” would truly make us feel that they have
open forum.
In
that case there should be no trouble for the Circular to publish the
names of the members gathering at the conclave to promote the
“Mount”.
Winston´s
various offer were not rejected but instead was referred to the
different committees that took care of each part of the activities.
Fr.
Cuthbert we learned was the head the refreshments committee.
I
joked about the committees because with five priests, to have five
committees, they just had to pass the presidential hat around to
indicate who the leader of which committee was, jajajaja
This
is the sad story of the monastery and the lack of postulants.
Winston
offered the head of the refreshments committee (Fr. Cuthbert) 1200
soft drinks and water from ASAA.
The
offer was to be considered and would be presented in the next
celebration meeting as they had hired a Catering company for the act.
As
you can deduct from this, is that the decision making process has
tortuous path in the approving or not, of any help be it intellectual
or material.
Like
I have published an email in the past, there is little trust left
after all the problems that the Abbot had to cope with when he took
office.
But
I am sure that there is no obstruction when it is monetary offer as
it can be deposited in the collection box which has no say on the
matter. Jajajaj.
The
ASAA can plan a Reunion around October 13th 2012 ???, to coincide
with the centennial celebration.

Thank
you, Joe, for the accounting.
I
hope I have already expressed individually to all concerned my
sincere gratitude for the magnificent effort you of the Trinidad
contingent put into the past weekend for the Mount old boys.
You
guys excelled, and Trinidad hospitality was exemplified.
Thank
you all again.
Don
PS:
I am not sure that Dr Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent will appreciate
your sending him all this stuff! I have deleted him from my response
accordingly.

Dear
Fellow Alumni,
Please
find the financial statement attached. If any would be so kind to
contribute to making up the deficit incurred it would be helpful. In
the interest of transparency I have named all who have contributed
cash to the activities.
If
I have offended any who would prefer to remain anonymous please
forgive me but you know that some are always concerned that money is
properly accounted for, to the extreme.
As
previously, some have promised but now seem reluctant to commit.
If
I have forgotten to include any contribution that some may have made,
please be so kind to call or e-mail and remind me.
I
will be viewing the raw footage filmed on Monday on my return from
vacation in July, after which I will publish the movie.
If
anyone wants to join me in editing the documentary you are welcome.
I
will need the pictures that Ladislao and Don took to create the best
finished product.
I
would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere
appreciation and that of those who were my close collaborators (Jimmy
Samaroo, Roger Juman, Chris Knowles, Gabriel Faria and Dennis Gurley)
for the many words of encouragement and support which you have
recently expressed.
Sincerely,
Joe,

Dear
All,
Please
forgive me for not recognising the tremendous contribution of Winston
Ramsahai, in facilitating Ladislao and providing curry and roti for
1000TT on Tuesday evening, in my earlier e-mail.
Good
job Winston!
sincerely,
Joe

Gary,
You
are quite right to ask.
I
decided to film the lunch and make a documentary of it to record the
event for prosperity.
I
asked Gabriel if he could do at his cost but we decided it would be
best that others be given the job.
In
the limited time available I asked my friend Timmy Mora (who is one
of T&T'S most capable film producers) to do me a favour, at the
lowest possible cost.
I
had little time to make the decision and didn't do so until he called
me 2 hours before the lunch.
Given
the time constraints and the unavailability of individuals, none of
the activities which were planned ever received committee approval or
were discussed as needing committee approval.
The
amount of planning and organisation necessary could hardly have been
accomplished only in the meeting in Dennis Gurley's office the Friday
before, for which many were unavailable:
I
couldn't see myself getting much done by lobbying the directors to
agree to every detail.
Some
like yourself indicated that had very little time to get involved in
the planning and organisation.
The
consensus that I understood existed is that I had the general support
of THE DIRECTORS of the ASSOCIATION to act as would further our aims.
Possibly,
you can ask them if I have misrepresented them or if they disagree
with my decision.
Sincerely,
Joe

Dear
brothers,
Please
see below details of bro. Joseph Perez’s funeral.
Bro.
Joe was the principal of the St. Bede's vocational school for many
years.
He
was an accomplished woodworker and a quiet unassuming individual whom
I remember as always being of good cheer and humble demeanour.
He
hailed from Matura in the north east of Trinidad.
Bro.
Joe served as sub prior, for many years.
When
he entered the monastery it was a time of rigid demarcation between
worker and choir monks, nonetheless the accepted a vocation of
absolute service to his church and Christ his redeemer.
May
the souls of the faithfully departed thru the mercy of god rest in
peace!
Sincerely,
Joe
HOMOLOGY
BRO.
JOSEPH BASIL PEREZ, OSB (1925 – 2012)
Monk
of Mount St Benedict Abbey, Trinidad
Joseph Basil Perez was born in Matura
in the County of St. Andrew, Trinidad on 14 June 1925. His father,
William, died while he was still an infant and his mother, Daniela,
died when he was nine years old. He joined the Abbey of Mount St
Benedict on 02 February 1947and was professed as a monk on 04
February 1950. Bro Joe, as he is affectionately called, seemed to
possess the rare gift of eternal youth as he kept that boyish look
with him up to his dying day. His association with youth throughout
his monastic life may have contributed to his youthful demeanour. He
was constantly in touch with his young relatives who visited him
regularly at the Mount. He reciprocated by putting aside time each
year to spend with them in Matura. As a skilled craftsman, Bro
Joseph imparted his cabinet-making skills to hundreds of young people
over his monastic life. Principal of St Bede Vocational School for
25 years, he kept in touch with the young people even in his
“retirement”.
His life as a monk radiated joy and
commitment. His commitment to the Divine Office was exemplary and so
was his commitment to his work. He truly epitomised the monastic
axiom, Ora et Labora (Pray and Work). His mind was constantly in
search of truth and he would often be seen reading from biblical and
theological commentaries. He was also fond of writing and spent much
time expressing his thoughts with pen and paper. He wrote several
booklets over the years, one of which, “The Woodworker” was
published in the Archdiocesan Pastoral Bulletin. This book, “The
Woodworker”, spelled out a spirituality which was nurtured through
his association with wood. His experience was that “a lover of
natural wood becomes affected in at least three marked ways:
physically, mentally and emotionally.” He developed a wholistic
approach to spirituality. Some of the Abbey College Boys would
remember him working quietly in his wood-work shop and would
sometimes ask him to make “tops” for them.
He composed songs and played the
guitar. The St Bede Vocational School Song was composed by him. As
Sub-Prior of the abbey for several years he was always a trusted
member of the Abbot’s council. His work also took him out of the
monastery. He assisted the poor and disadvantaged of John John at St
Martin’s Welfare Association where for ten years he spent two days
each week teaching. Several of those young men in Laventille whom he
assisted are now making a positive contribution to the Society. His
teaching encompassed not only cabinet-making, but also Human
Relations Skills and Religion.
He was a much sought-after counsellor
in our Parlour Ministry for several of his final years. Pilgrims
continue to ask for him. God has blessed the Mount with a wonderful
human being and he will be sorely missed, not only by the monks, but
by the hundreds of pilgrims and young people who he encountered over
his long and fruitful life. He passed away peacefully at the Living
Water Hospice in Port of Spain on Saturday 12 May 2012. May he rest
in peace!
LET US PRAY
All-powerful Father, by the
resurrection of your Son from the dead, death has no power over those
who have fallen asleep in the true faith. With this confidence, we
pray for your servant, Joseph, who served you in the monastic life
while in this world. Mercifully give him a dwelling place in the
bosom of Abraham together with all the saints from the days of Adam
until our present time, and make us all worthy of your heavenly
kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
